Phyllis Chang has been teaching violin professionally since 2002. She is
highly enthusiastic, patient, and technically as well as musically focused.
She uses the Suzuki core repertoire in a traditional/classical teaching approach,
emphasizing fundamental musicianship, and supplementing with scales and ear
training, theory and sight-reading.
Phyllis authored a comprehensive reference book for violin left-handed fingering titled,
"Violin-ing Illustrated!" It has been self-published and sold locally, and she one day
hopes to have it commercially published and distributed to help more violin students
master the violin.
Phyllis has studied from the following teachers:
- Daniel Kobialka, San Francisco Symphony (formerly Principal 2nd)
- Elizabeth Liang Chang, formerly Fremont Symphony
- Gil Gleason, Director of Oakland Symphony
- Renee Ruetz, violinist
Her formal music education includes the complete music curriculum at
Diablo Valley College (no degree offered) with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Phyllis is a musician for Praise Chapel Church in Concord (main performance interest)
and has also performed/solo for Harvester's Conference (San Jose) and with the
Diablo Valley Orchestra and other groups.
Long before becoming a musician, Phyllis worked in a technical field and earned the
following:
- UC Berkeley EECS Outstanding GSI Teaching Award
- UC Berkeley Samuel Silver Award
Sometimes her students get to hear about frequency/pitch relationships,
the physics of harmonics, overtones, and other such geekspeak!
